HealthCapital Newsletter February 2022

Dear Sir or Madam,

The players in our cluster will continue to set standards in life sciences and healthcare in the future. For this purpose, the Berlin Cell Hospital was founded shortly before the end of last year. As the first of its kind in the world, it is intended to lay a foundation for the further development and implementation of cell-based medicine in the health sector. In our special topic, we introduce you to this important project that is set to change medicine far beyond the Berlin-Brandenburg region. Meet some of the key players in this initiative at BIONNALE 2022 (11-12 May 2022). This year you have the choice of attending BIONNALE on site in Berlin or following the event via the Live Stream. Do not miss out on the opportunity to network!

If you had to have a PCR test performed in the last few weeks, it could be that this test was developed in Berlin. In our portrait you can get to know the company TIB MolBiol, which was recently taken over by Roche, that developed the first SARS-CoV-2 PCR test and has shipped over 60 million tests worldwide.

Your

Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) use grown organoids from pancreatic tumors to enable patient-specific diagnostics and targeted therapy

The prognosis for pancreatic cancer is usually grim: The tumors are often detected too late and are then difficult to treat. Yet a small percentage of patients survive many years after diagnosis. Scientists from the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH) have now grown organoids from various pancreatic tumors in the laboratory, which they used to identify individual cell types and test the effects of various drugs. This enables patient-specific diagnostics and opens up the possibility of targeted therapy. The researchers have now published their findings in the journal Nature Communications.

Fraunhofer Institutes for Applied Polymer Research IAP developed 3D printing that enables tissue with customized shape

In the case of serious soft tissue injuries, tissue transplantation is sometimes unavoidable. For the patient, however, this means a serious intervention. In the future, the missing tissue could grow directly in the patient's body - in isolation chambers that can be implanted under the skin and individually adapted to the wound geometry. The 3D-printed chambers developed by the research team from the Fraunhofer Institutes for Applied Polymer Research IAP and for Laser Technology ILT as well as the BG Klinik Ludwigshafen will be presented at the MEDICA medical technology trade fair in Düsseldorf from November 15 to 18 in Hall 3, Booth E74.
